Cuba: the internet and the remittances as the factors boosting the economy

Since the beginning of the restoration of the Cuba and the United States of America relations it has been many projections made in the growth of this Caribbean island. Among the most important are the expansion plans of the tourism with the creation of new complexes that imbue the nation of a sufficient structure to meet the demand of the visitors. Also the internet access and the possibility of the remittances are other recent changes that focus on boosting the Cuban economy.2

The leading global service chain, the Western Union Company has the option to send remittances to Cuba from other countries besides the United States of America. The Western Union Company already has a remittance service to Cuba from the United States of America, for which it has more than 490 local agents in each of the 16 provinces and 168 municipalities.

The remittances can be sent to the family members and other Cuban citizens to enable them to cope with the family expenses and the personal support for the private economic activity. According to the statement of the Western Union Company, the cash remittances to Cuba in the year 2013 totaled 2.800 billion and 90% of that sum came from the United States of America. In the year 2015 it made 262 million consumer transactions worldwide, which put into circulation 82.000 billion of principal between the consumers, and completed 508 million of the business payments.

The Internet access

Cuba is one of the countries with the worst internet access in the world. To change this reality technology the giant Google plans to open soon a next generation technological center in a location belonging to a famous Cuban artist. The idea of the company implies that the internet service comes free of charge to the community and functions at a rate 70 times higher than the currently operating.

By optimizing the service, you can download the files at speeds of 70 megabytes per second, which is a huge difference with the speed of the wi-fi that works on the island for $ 2.

This center is part of a larger plan to improve the internet access on the island. The study is already well advanced, is equipped with the latest technology, the laptops, the cell phones and even the virtual reality glasses are in the studio belonging to the Cuban sculptor Alexis Leiva Machado.

Regarding the initiative of the COO of Google in Cuba, Brett Perlmutter said that the company was optimistic with the study named Google + Kcho. Mor and is just a part of a larger initiative so that all the Cuban people have the internet access.

“We want to show the world what happens when the Cuban creative energy is combined with the world class technology in its niche” Brett Perlmutter said.

The study will be open to the community five days a week from 7 am to midnight and has the capacity to serve 40 people at once.

The ambitious project has an enormous symbolic importance in a country that has long maintained a strict control of the internet access of the citizens by the government as for the officials of this window to the communication that poses a threat to the government island.3

However and demonstrating the intentions of mark the country towards the change and the economic liberalization, the state of telecommunications company of Cuba became involved in the project and is being responsible for providing the Internet connectivity through its fiber optic channel. This negotiation was held between the senior members of the governments of Cuba and the United States of America.

Clearly both initiatives will promote the economy of the island, the remittances and not only to depend on the United States of America but from the Cubans who send money to the relatives from around the world. Meanwhile, the internet access not only impacts the extent that the Cubans can access the video conferences with the family members around the world (in several cases this has been the way of contact with the family that has not been seen for years) and also it gives the possibility that the Cubans can be integrated into the working models that depend primarily on an internet connection.

The restoration of the relations between Cuba and the United States of America is starting to bear fruit, in a country that although it was fenced from the rest of the world, has a population with great potential, many private sector leaders in the areas of the tourism, the transport, the services and the gastronomy and the business entrepreneurs thanks to the relaxation of the measures of the government of Raul Castro, have begun to proliferate as the restaurants, the beauty salons and the cafes.
